Built at Braila in 1976, Sadu cargo ship with a displacement of 4737 tdw, belonging to IEFM NAVROM Constanta, has perished on December 2, 1988.
The vessel was removed from normal operation banned from international voyages, being scheduled for repairs. In his last voyage, Sadu was loaded in Constanta Harbor with 3025 tones of coking coal to be delivered to Galati. The cargo ship left the port of Constanta on November 26, 1988 at 20:00 and arrived at Galati in November 27, 1988, 19:00. Because navigation paperwork was expired, specialists of Romanian Naval Register - Galati inspected the ship on the date of November 30, 1988. It was a casual certified inspection and the vessel was allowed to carry a single voyage from Galati from Constanta, for repairs.
On the morning of December 1, 1988, the cargo ship Sadu left the port of Galati, bound for Constanta Harbor, arriving at destination in the evening of December 1st 1988. The commander chose anchorage spot, without communicating the position to Constanta harbor authorities but was recorded in the logbook.
Romanian-flagged ship, commanded by captain Sergiu Lucian Grigorescu sank on a bad weather by hitting the pier. Anchor harrowing, problems at the engine, worsened due to unfavorable weather conditions and the waves carried the ship until the levee north of Constanta Sud Agigea harbor. The first impact with the pier took place at 1:15 p.m.. Repeated and violent impact made 7 holes in the engine compartment and cargo compartments, which lead to flooding and sinking around 1600 hours.
Only 7 of the 22 crew members survived, from the 15 declared dead, four were never found and the rest of 11 deceased died drowned or crushed by the impact with the pier.
After the divers examining the wreck, authorities declared that the ship is lying on the starboard side, about 3 meters immersed in sand near the bow and stern is about 70 meters from the pier. Also all the propeller blades were broken and bent and rudder was deformed due to the impact with the pier.
